Another Year of Anti-Semitism and Anti-Israelism in Norway

- Manfred Gerstenfeld

Over this past year there were significant anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli incidents in Norway. Among these were anti-Semitic television satire programs, an act of the Nazification of Israel by a Norwegian diplomat, physical attacks on a pro-Israeli demonstration, death threats against Jews and a desecration of a Jewish cemetery. The Labor-dominated Norwegian government is indirectly giving financial support to NGOs that demonize Israel. This Norwegian government's attitude toward Israel is among the most negative in Europe.

The Origins of Christian Anti-Semitism

- Interview with Pieter van der Horst

Christian anti-Semitism began much later than Jesus' life. In the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, which are the historically more reliable ones, Jesus views himself as a messenger of God to the Jews and as a member of the Jewish people. The New Testament has several anti-Semitic elements in its chronologically latest documents. Toward the end of the fourth century, much-publicized sermons of the church father John Chrysostom combined Christian anti-Jewish elements derived from the New Testament with earlier pagan ones. These themes were gradually integrated into the anti-Jewish discourse of the church.

Changing Jewish Communities

Jewish Grandparenting in the United States

- Interview with Rela Mintz Geffen

Many stereotypes exist about Jewish grandparents. One is that in their children's interfaith marriages they will be the ones to teach grandchildren about being Jewish, thus functioning as transmitters of the Jewish heritage. In reality-in such a sensitive situation-grandparents are often afraid to fulfill this role, even if they are knowledgeable about Judaism. Analysis of grandparenting has to be carried out in the context of broader family relationships and against the background of an in depth study of the Jewish tradition on this issue.

Muslim-Jewish Relations in Australia: Challenges and Threats

- Interview with Jeremy Jones

The integration of Muslims and Jews into the wider Australian population has to be seen in the context of modern Australia's history as a country of immigration with an ethos of multiculturalism. There is a network of interfaith activity in Australia that includes dialogue and collaborative projects between Jewish and Muslim Australians. In recent years, Australian governments have given support to projects that promote better understanding of Jews and Judaism among Muslims in Australia and the wider Asia/Pacific region. There are many documented examples of anti-Jewish propaganda circulated by and among members of various Muslim communities in Australia.  There is little firm evidence of this being a widespread phenomenon. Considerable tensions between the communities arose as a result of Israel's Operation Cast Lead in December 2008 and January 2009.

Book Reviews

Political Islam, Word Politics and Europe by Bassam Tibi

- Reviewed by Daphne Burdman

Bassam Tibi examines Islamist expansionism both in Muslim and Western societies, a phenomenon that appears in violent and deceptively peaceful guises. He presents a penetrating and analytical study of the West's inability to comprehend the underlying ideologies of Islamism, which is crucial if it hopes effectively to confront this increasingly dire situation.

The Resurgence of Anti-Semitism: Jews, Israel and Liberal Opinion by Bernard Harrison

- Malcolm F. Lowe

These are people whose criticism of Israel, and collaterally of Jews, has a hardly deniable anti-Semitic resonance, yet who almost invariably believe, with as much sincerity as they can muster, that they are anything but anti-Semites, that they are actively opposed to all racism whether directed at Jews or anyone else. This is the phenomenon with which Harrison's book is concerned.

Major Anti-Semitic Motifs in Arab Cartoons

- Joël Kotek

The main recurrent motif in Arab cartoons concerning Israel is "the devilish Jew." This image conveys the idea that Jews behave like Nazis, kill children and love blood. The similarity with themes promulgated by the Nazis is evident. Many Arab cartoons praise suicide bombing or call for murder. The collective image of the Jews thus projected lays the groundwork for a possible genocide.

Antisemitism Embedded in British Culture

- Interview with Robert S. Wistrich

The anti-Zionist narrative probably has greater legitimacy in Great Britain than in any other Western society. Antisemitism of the "anti-Zionist" variety has achieved such resonance, particularly in elite opinion, that various British media are leaders in this field. The UK holds a pioneering position in promoting academic boycotts of Israel. The same is true for trade-union efforts at economic boycotts. There is also no other Western society where jihadi radicalism has proved as violent and dangerous as in the UK.

Devising Unified Criteria and Methods of Monitoring Anti-Semitism

- Michael Whine

Awareness of the increase in racist and anti-Semitic violence has led the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the European Union (EU) to settle agreements to monitor and combat the phenomenon. A European working definition of anti-Semitism and another on all forms of hate crimes will assist states to devise unified criteria for inclusion in their monitoring. Some governments, however, are failing to abide by the agreements into which they have entered to monitor such crime, including anti-Semitism. This paper examines these agreements, the reports that are published on combating anti-Semitism, and the reasons why the fifty-six governments concerned are falling short in fulfilling their obligations.

Prejudice and Demonization In The Swedish Middle East Debate During The 2006 Lebanon War

- Mathan Ravid

Since the beginning of the new millennium increased anti-Semitism has been detected within the political left in some European countries. It is often said to be most pronounced in the media, where criticism of Israel is sometimes tainted by anti-Jewish sentiments. An analysis of the contents of eight different newspapers of the Swedish left, from mainstream Social Democratic to radical Marxist-Leninist, suggests that the situation in Sweden is no different. During the 2006 Lebanon War they all expressed a number of attitudes and notions of questionable nature, which may be roughly divided into three different groups.

Durban 2: An Important Victory in the Narrative Wars?

- Prof. Gerald Steinberg

Eight years after the disastrous 2001 Durban conference on racism, which adopted a strategy of demonizing Israel through abusing the rhetoric of human rights, the review conference held recently in Geneva marked a major turning point. Ten major governments did not participate, and the presence of anti-Israel NGOs that exploit human rights was kept to a minimum. This presentation will discuss the factors behind this change, and its implications for the continuing narrative wars.

Argentina: A Case Study on Current Anti-Semitism

- Dr. Gustavo Perednik

The recent ascendance of Judeophobia in Argentina reflects the current world trend in which Nationalism and Christian Zeal have been replaced by Islamism as a source of inspiration and finance. This new wave of hatred is penetrating Latin America in general, and Argentina in particular, buoyed by the Venezuelan government.

Jewish Environmental Studies

Technology and Jewish Life

- Manfred Gerstenfeld and Avraham Wyler

Technology continues to have a strong and specific impact on Jewish life. From a socio-halakhic viewpoint, technology influences Jews' choice of residence, has socialized and politicized kashrut certification, and has changed modes of Jewish study. The development of new technologies has brought with it many halakhic challenges and decisions, on Shabbat observance among other things.
